The Kern River Oil Field, discovered in 1899, covers an area of 10,750 acres in a rough oval extending over the low hills north-northeast of Bakersfield, hills which are now almost completely barren except for oil rigs, drilling pads, and associated equipment. This area is the densest operational oil development in the state of California, yielding a cumulative production of close to 2 billion barrels of oil by the end of 2006, it is the third-largest oil field in California. The principal operator on the field was Chevron Corp.
